Established in 1987, Kuvempu University is an affiliated State University, recognized by the UGC under 2(f) and 12(b). Named after the renowned Kannada writer Shri Kuvempu, the university has carved out a distinctive academic profile and cultivated a unique cultural identity. The features of this identity appear to have been inspired by the multifaceted personality of Kuvempu, a highly acclaimed figure in Kannada literature, a recipient of the Jnanpith award, and one of the most significant cultural figures in modern India. The university, in its essence, reflects the rich legacy and contributions of Kuvempu to literature and culture.

Kuvempu University stands as a convergence point between the local and the global, the regional and the pan-Indian, tradition and modernity, and a profound commitment to both social and cultural inclusivity and academic excellence. The university's emblem features a mythical animal, Gajahamsa, combining the trunk of an elephant and the body of a swan, a symbol prevalent in Vijayanagara and Keladi sculpture and temple art. It represents the integration of knowledge and wealth.
Spanning over the districts of Shimoga and Chikmagalur, the university has a distinctive academic profile, harmonising a dedication to rural ethos with a modern spirit. Offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. programs across various disciplines, it hosts 35 Post-graduate Departments in the Faculties of Arts, Commerce, Education, and Science and Technology.
Situated at the Jnana Sahyadri campus, the university occupies 230 acres of lush green, picturesque landscape. Constructed on small hillocks, the main buildings seamlessly blend with the natural surroundings, creating an environment free from pollution. The examination pattern followed by Kuvempu University's online program is the most commonly followed pattern, which includes two major components: internal assessment and end-term examinations.
The internal assessment evaluates the learning of a student through the digital medium and it evaluates the student's self-learning through the assignment they are assigned at the beginning of the semester, whereas the end-term examinations are conducted to evaluate a student's overall theoretical understanding of the program which they are enrolled. The internal assessment carries a marks weightage of around 20-30% whereas en examinations carry 70-80% of the total weightage.
Kuvempu University assists its students in every possible way and guides them students throughout their academic journey for a better future aspect. The university has a dedicated placement cell to guide the students and with regularly organized educational activities the placement cell makes sure that students build up leadership qualities within themselves these activities help encourage the students to enhance their abilities and upskill their existing skills for better future aspects and easy selection in their choice of company during the placement drive.
