CAT Study Tips for the Last 10 Days

Unquestionably, among the most competitive tests available to prospective MBA candidates in India, is Common Admission Test (CAT). Many applicants discover they are anxious, rushing to review important ideas, and desperately trying to fit in additional practice just ten days before the test. To be honest, though, this last phase is vital and how you spend the last ten days will either help or hurt your performance on test day.
If you are reading this, you probably belong among those driven applicants trying to maximize the remaining time. Here's a thorough guide on successful study techniques for the last ten days before the CAT test to help you keep on target.

1. Assess Your Current Standing: Focus on Strengths and Weaknesses

Before you dive into the final stretch, take a step back and analyze your current preparation level. This is the time to be brutally honest with yourself. Ask yourself:

  • Which sections are your strongest, and which are your weakest?
  • What types of questions do you find most challenging?
  • Which areas do you tend to make silly mistakes in?

You can figure out where to put your efforts by doing a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) study. At this point, you should focus on making your strongest parts stronger and fixing any major flaws. Don't try to learn new things, especially if there are things you already know a lot about. Instead, make what you already know stronger.

2. Prioritize Sectional Revision: VARC, DILR, and QA

The CAT exam is divided into three sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA). Here’s how you can prioritize your study time for each section:

Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC)

  • Reading Comprehension: Continue practicing RC passages daily. Focus on improving reading speed and comprehension. Pay attention to understanding the tone of the passage and identifying the main ideas quickly.
  • Verbal Ability: Revise topics like sentence rearrangement, para-jumbles, and odd one out. For vocabulary, go over word lists, but focus on application rather than rote memorization.

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR)

  • Practice Sets: This section requires regular practice. Solve at least 4-5 sets daily, focusing on mixed questions involving charts, graphs, tables, and puzzles. Prioritize accuracy over speed in the initial stages; as the exam approaches, shift towards speed.
  • Analysis: Review past mistakes and patterns. If you’ve struggled with particular types of puzzles or charts, revisit those. Analyze which question types you’re most comfortable with, and prioritize them in the exam.

Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

  • Formula Revision: Spend 30-45 minutes daily revising important formulas and concepts. Topics like Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and Number Systems are crucial.
  • Sectional Mocks: Take short, timed quizzes focusing on different topics. Analyze your accuracy and speed, and revisit areas where you falter.

3. Take Mock Tests and Analyze Them Thoroughly

Mock tests are an essential part of your preparation, especially in the last 10 days. However, it's not just about taking the test but analyzing it effectively.

  • Frequency: Take a full-length mock every alternate day. Use the remaining days for revision and focused practice.
  • Mock Analysis: After each mock test, spend 2-3 hours reviewing it. Identify the questions you got wrong, the ones you skipped, and the areas where you took too much time. This will help you refine your test-taking strategy.
  • Simulate Exam Conditions: Take the mocks at the same time as your actual CAT exam slot. This helps your body and mind get used to performing at peak levels during those hours.

4. Fine-Tune Your Test Strategy: Time Management and Question Selection

The CAT exam is not just a test of knowledge but also of strategy. With limited time for each section, managing your time wisely is crucial. Here are some pointers:

  • Question Selection: Not every question is worth your time. Focus on questions that you can solve quickly and accurately. If a question seems too complex or time-consuming, skip it and move on. Remember, there’s no need to attempt every question to score well.
  • Time Allocation: Divide your time wisely across sections. For example:
    • VARC: 40 minutes
    • DILR: 40 minutes
    • QA: 40 minutes

Allocate an additional 5 minutes for reviewing your answers or attempting skipped questions.

5. Strengthen Your Mental Health and Well-being

As the exam day approaches, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. But remember that your mental state plays a significant role in how you perform. Here’s how you can keep your mind sharp:

  • Get Adequate Sleep: Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night. A well-rested mind is much sharper and less prone to silly mistakes.
  • Exercise Regularly: Physical activity, even a 20-minute walk, can significantly reduce stress and increase concentration.
  • Practice Mindfulness or Meditation: Spending 10-15 minutes daily in meditation can help reduce anxiety and improve focus.

6. Focus on Short, High-Impact Study Sessions

In the last few days, instead of marathon study sessions, opt for shorter, more focused sessions. This can help keep your mind fresh and improve retention. Here’s a sample study schedule:

7. Maintain a Positive Mindset: Believe in Yourself

A positive mindset can make a significant difference in how you perform under pressure. Remind yourself of how far you’ve come and the effort you’ve put in. Some practical tips:

  • Affirmations: Use positive affirmations like, “I am prepared,” or “I can handle any question that comes my way.”
  • Visualization: Spend a few minutes each day visualizing yourself taking the exam with confidence, completing sections efficiently, and emerging victorious.
  • Limit Social Media: The last thing you need is unnecessary stress from comparing yourself to others or reading about how much others have prepared. Focus on your own journey.

8. Practical Preparations for Exam Day

Lastly, don’t ignore the logistics of the exam day. Make sure you:

  • Know the route to your exam center.
  • Have all necessary documents (admit card, photo ID, etc.) ready.
  • Plan to reach the venue at least an hour before the reporting time.
  • Avoid heavy meals before the exam to stay alert.

The last 10 days before the CAT are very important, but you can do your best if you have the right attitude, plan, and commitment. Keep cool, think about what you know, and make good use of this time. Remember that how smart you are about studying is just as important as how much you learn.

All the best for your CAT Exam! Remember, you've got this. Stay confident, stay focused, and give it your best shot!
