Choosing the right MBA entrance exam can significantly influence your business school options and career trajectory. Among the various options available in India, the Management Aptitude Test (MAT) and the Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) are two popular choices. 1. Overview of MAT and CMAT

- CMAT: Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), CMAT is a national-level entrance exam held once a year in January. It is a computer-based test (CBT) and is accepted by over 1,000 MBA colleges in India.

- MAT: The MAT exam consists of five sections – Language Comprehension, Mathematical Skills, Data Analysis and Sufficiency, Intelligence and Critical Reasoning, and Indian and Global Environment. Each section has 40 questions, making it a total of 200 questions, and the duration of the exam is 150 minutes. There is no negative marking for wrong answers in the Indian and Global Environment section.
- CMAT: CMAT comprises four sections – Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension, and General Awareness. Each section has 25 questions, with a total of 100 questions. The exam duration is 180 minutes, and there is negative marking for wrong answers across all sections.
3. Difficulty Level
- MAT: The MAT is generally considered easier compared to other national-level MBA entrance exams. The questions are relatively straightforward, and the time per question is higher, making it a good choice for students who prefer a less rigorous exam.
- CMAT: CMAT is slightly more challenging than MAT, especially in the Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation section. However, it is still considered moderate in difficulty compared to exams like CAT or XAT.
4. Eligibility Criteria
- MAT: Any graduate can appear for the MAT exam. There is no specific percentage required in graduation to apply for MAT, which makes it accessible for a wider range of students.
- CMAT: To appear for CMAT, candidates must have a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university. There is no minimum percentage required, making it similar to MAT in terms of eligibility criteria.
5. Accepted Colleges
- MAT: MAT scores are accepted by more than 600 business schools across India. However, most of these colleges fall under the tier-2 and tier-3 category, with a few exceptions.
- CMAT: CMAT scores are accepted by over 1,000 institutions, including prestigious colleges such as Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS), KJ Somaiya Institute of Management, and Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS). CMAT provides access to a higher number of top-tier colleges compared to MAT.
