Guru Nanak Dev University was founded in Amritsar on November 24, 1969, to commemorate the 500th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. As a residential and affiliating university, its vision, as outlined in the Guru Nanak Dev University Act 1969, emphasises the provision of education and promotion of research across various disciplines. The university's objectives encompass the humanities, learned professions, sciences, with a particular emphasis on applied sciences and technology.
Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has earned recognition for its academic excellence and achievements. Notably, it is ranked among the Top Ten "High Performing State Public Universities" in India by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). The university has shown consistent improvement in its National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking over the last four years, securing the 51st position in 2020. GNDU has also enhanced its H-Index, moving from the 63rd position in 2017 to the 107th position in 2020.
In the WEEK-Hansa Research Best University survey 2019, Guru Nanak Dev University achieved the 7th rank in North Zone Multi-Disciplinary Universities and the 14th rank in All India Multi-Disciplinary Universities. Additionally, GNDU holds the 11th Rank among State Universities in India according to the "India Today Ranking-2020." In the India Today (MDRA) survey 2019, the university secured the 17th rank in India.
On a global scale, Guru Nanak Dev University is recognized among the top 10 State Public Universities in the country and among the top 9% of universities worldwide by the Centre for World University Ranking (CWUR).
