The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad, also known as IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, was founded in 1926 and is located in Dhanbad, Jharkhand. It was established under the Institute of Technology Act, 1961. Under its 18 distinct departments, the institute provides undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, dual-degree, and executive programmes in a variety of specialisations.

IIT Dhanbad's campus spans 218 acres and provides a world-class education with globally competent programmes. The primary objective is to provide each student with practical learning and hands-on engineering experience throughout their course, thereby fostering the development of future-ready leaders at the university. The institute is endowed with a technically sound infrastructure that includes all the necessary amenities for students to succeed in their academic pursuits.

The Rajya Sabha passed a bill on August 2, 2016, converting IIT (ISM) Dhanbad into an IIT. Lord Irwin established the Indian School of Mines on December 9, 1926. Meanwhile, IIT Dhanbad's name was changed to Indian School of Mines in 1957, when it began offering programmes in petroleum engineering and applied geophysics. IIT Dhanbad is a globally recognised institution that is ranked 42 in the overall category, 17 in the engineering category, and 44 in the management category of the NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework).

1. Eligibility Criteria

  • Educational Qualifications: Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree (10+2+3 system) or equivalent in any discipline with a minimum of 60% marks or a CGPA of 6.0 on a 10-point scale. For SC/ST/PwD candidates, the minimum requirement is 55% marks or a CGPA of 5.5.
  • Entrance Exam: Candidates must have a valid score in the Common Admission Test (CAT). The CAT score is mandatory and plays a significant role in shortlisting candidates for the next stages of the admission process.

  

2. Application Process

  • Online Application: Interested candidates must apply online through the official IIT (ISM) Dhanbad website. A non-refundable application fee is required to complete the process.
    • General/OBC/EWS candidates: INR 1600
    • SC/ST/PwD candidates: INR 800

 

3. Selection Process

  • CAT Score: The selection process begins with shortlisting candidates based on their CAT percentile.
  • Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI): Shortlisted candidates are called for the Group Discussion and Personal Interview rounds. These are typically held at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad or other designated centers.
  • Final Selection: The final selection is based on a composite score, which includes the following:
    • CAT score (Weightage: 60%)
    • Performance in GD & PI (Weightage: 30%)
    • Work experience, academic profile, and diversity (Weightage: 10%)
