Guru Nanak Dev Jagat Established by the State Legislature Act No. 19 of 2019, Punjab State Open University (JGND PSOU) in Patiala, Punjab, is the first open university in the state. Focusing on SEWA (skill development, employment, wisdom, and accessibility), the school offers a range of programmes, including professional and student degrees like MA in English and Punjabi, M.Com, M.Sc. in Computer Science, B.Com, B.Sc., and BA. In addition, it gives training programmes that help students improve their skills and make them more employable.
The university has adopted the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by providing both traditional and new diplomas and certificate programmes. As part of a learner-centered model that gives students options for how to finish programmes, it delivers e-tutorials, e-content, web tools, and self-assessment. Importantly, the university has special programmes for workers, teachers, prisoners, and students with disabilities. For example, Divyangjan (people with disabilities) get free education.
JGND PSOU uses a credit system and welcomes new students twice a year, in January and July. The university plans lectures, meetings, talks, and workshops to make learning more fun. Additionally, it has formed relationships with different groups to improve the educational opportunities it provides and encourages involvement in the community.
Schools at the university include the School of Languages, the School of Business Management and Commerce, the School of Social Sciences and Liberal Arts, the School of Sciences and Emerging Technologies, the School of Education and Vocation, and the School of Religious Studies. Additionally, it has 126 Learner Support Centres spread out across Punjab that offer regular therapy meetings for students.
According to reports, students who graduate from JGND PSOU get an average pay rise of 50%, have access to more than 300 job partners, and have three times as many interview chances. Famous companies that hire people include Accenture, Capgemini, H&M, ISRO, Paytm, Vistara, and Decathlon.
Higher Education Council (UGC) has accepted all of JGND PSOU's courses, which means that people who complete them can work in both public and private fields. Although the university doesn't offer online exams and requires students to go to designated test centres, the wide range of subjects taught, including science, arts, social sciences, technology, and many more, shows that it takes an all-around approach to open and distance learning.
