With its headquarters in Mumbai, India, Smt Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University (SNDT) is a well-known college for women. The university was founded in 1916 and is known for being a leader in its field. It was the first university for women in India and South-East Asia. Its main office is in Churchgate, South Mumbai. It has a big influence in Maharashtra, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Surat, and Goa through the schools it works with. The main campus is in the Santacruz–Juhu area of Mumbai. There are also sites in Pune and Mumbai.
The history of the university starts in 1896, when Bharatratna Dhondo Keshav Karve opened an ashram for widows and other weak women in Hingne, near Pune. He did this because he knew that these women needed education to become independent and confident. This project grew into a regular school for women and girls, which laid the groundwork for what would become SNDT Women's University. When this happened, it was a big deal because society's strict views and old traditions made it hard for women to go to school.
As of 2020, SNDT Women's University is ranked among the top 96–100 universities in India. This shows that it is dedicated to giving students a good education and giving women power through learning.
