The University of Delhi is a well-known state university in Delhi, India. It was founded in 1922 by an Act of the state Legislative Assembly. A complete academic system with 16 schools, 86 departments, and 91 member colleges spread across its North and South campuses, as well as other colleges in the region, makes it an Institute of Eminence according to the University Grants Commission (UGC). Delhi University is one of the biggest university systems in the world, with more than 400,000 students registered in its schools and colleges that are connected to it. The university is very important in India's education system, which is shown by the fact that the Vice President of India is also its president.
Delhi University was created when four existing schools in Delhi joined together to form it. This made it a key university from the start. At first, it had classes in Arts and Science for about 750 kids. It has changed a lot over the years, and leaders like Sir Maurice Gwyer, who was Vice-Chancellor from 1938 to 1950, have helped it become more prestigious among academics. As a result of their excellent academic work, the university now has Centres of Advanced Studies in a number of different fields. Also, to keep up with changing educational needs, it has changed how it admits students from using percentage points from the 12th grade to the Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUET) starting in 2022.
The global and state ranks of Delhi University show how well it does in the classroom and how its study affects the world. The fact that it is ranked #=407 in the QS World University Rankings 2024 shows how well known it is around the world. It also does well in a number of subject-specific rankings, such as the QS Sustainability Ranking and the QS WUR Ranking By Subject, which shows how comprehensive and high-quality its academic programmes are.
Although it is one of the biggest universities in India, the university has also been praised for its work in research and teaching. Similar to how Delhi has grown, it started out small but has now grown a lot. In 1973, the South Campus opened, and a large fiber-optic network connects all of the schools and units. This growth has made it easier for kids all over the growing city to get into college.
With an elephant, a river, and an open book on a purple background, Delhi University's symbol shows its rich history and dedication to sharing knowledge. Politicians, academics, and artists who have graduated from the university are among its famous graduates. This shows how it has helped shape the leaders and creators of India and beyond.
