The history of Jamia Hamdard dates back to the establishment of a small Unani clinic in 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed, a prominent practitioner of the Unani System of Medicine. Driven by a vision to elevate the practice of Unani Medicine to a scientific discipline, Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed named his initiative "Hamdard," reflecting the ethos of "sympathy for all and sharing of pain." His son, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, continued to champion the philosophy and objectives of Hamdard in independent India. Even amidst the partition in 1947, Hakeem Abdul Hameed envisioned creating a complex of educational institutions focused on showcasing the contributions of Islam and Islamic culture to Indian civilization, along with the development of Unani medicine for effective disease treatment.
Jamia Hamdard was envisioned as an institution of higher learning in Unani Medicine, Islamic Studies, Biosciences, Pharmacy, Nursing, and other knowledge areas, aligning with the objectives of the wakf. Over the past decade, it has evolved into a distinguished higher education institution with specialised academic programs. New graduate and postgraduate programs, including Information Technology, Computer Applications, Business Management, Physiotherapy, and Occupational Therapy, have been introduced. This year, the institution is set to launch undergraduate programs in Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. Jamia Hamdard provides a range of postgraduate and
doctoral programs in various disciplines, supported by advanced facilities and resources.
