Madurai Kamaraj University has been on a commendable journey for over 53 years, overcoming diverse challenges and achieving excellence through continuous efforts. Established in 1965 by legislative assembly approval, the university is a statutory institution funded by the Government of Tamil Nadu and the University Grants Commission. Recognized as a member of the Association of Indian Universities and designated as a University with Potential for Excellence, it has paved the way for other institutions like Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Alagappa University, and Mother Theresa University.
Encompassing Madurai, Virudhunagar, Dindigul, and Theni districts, the university offers a diverse range of academic programs through 77 departments, 20 schools, 21 academic centres, and 21 quasi-academic supportive units. With 24 autonomous colleges, 14 aided colleges, 33 self-financing colleges, 18 approved institutions, 4 evening colleges, 6 constituent colleges, and one University College, Madurai Kamaraj University caters to the educational needs of students from both rural and urban areas.
The academic portfolio includes 41 postgraduate, 35 M.Phil., and 17 diploma/P.G. diploma/certificate courses. Affiliated colleges offer 66 U.G. and 45 P.G. courses. The university prioritises research, with 2428 students and research scholars actively engaged in more than 163 individual research projects, amounting to an outlay exceeding 34 Crores. The modernised central library, equipped with a vast collection of books, e-journals, and e-books, coupled with advanced ICT infrastructure, contributes to enriching the teaching and learning experience.
