Jamia Millia Islamia, originally established in Aligarh in 1920, transformed into a Central University in 1988 through an act of the Indian Parliament. The name "Jamia" means 'University,' and "Millia" means 'National' in Urdu. The institution's journey from a small pre-independence establishment to a central university in New Delhi, offering comprehensive education from nursery to specialised research, reflects the dedication, conviction, and vision of its founders. The growth of Jamia Millia Islamia is a story of hard work, perseverance, and sacrifice, as described by Sarojini Naidu, the nightingale of India.
Conception
Jamia Millia Islamia's inception was influenced by two significant trends during colonial British rule. The first was anti-colonial Islamic activism, and the second was the pro-independence aspirations of the politically radical section of western-educated Indian Muslim intelligentsia. In 1920, these two trends converged with Mahatma Gandhi acting as a catalyst. The anti-colonial activism, represented by the Khilafat, and the pro-independence aspirations, symbolised by the non-cooperation movement of the Indian National Congress, played pivotal roles in the creation of Jamia Millia Islamia. Rabindranath Tagore praised it as "one of the most progressive educational institutions of India."
In response to Gandhi's call to boycott educational institutions supported or run by the colonial regime, a group of nationalist teachers and students left Aligarh Muslim University, protesting against its pro-British inclinations. Key figures in this movement included Maulana Mehmud Hasan, Maulana Mohamed Ali, Hakim Ajmal Khan, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, and Abdul Majid Khwaja.
