Maharshi Dayanand University, initially established as Rohtak University in 1976, aims to promote interdisciplinary higher education and research in environmental, ecological, and life sciences. In 1977, it was renamed Maharshi Dayanand University in honour of the social reformer Maharshi Dayanand. Originally unitary and residential, it transitioned to an affiliating University in November 1978. The University received recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) for central government grants in March 1979.
Maharshi Dayanand University's sprawling campus, covering 622 acres, showcases a blend of modern architecture and natural beauty. The university offers educational and research programs through its 38 departments. The campus features 12 Teaching Blocks, 19 Hostels, a well-equipped Vivekananda Library, the grand Tagore Auditorium, a state-of-the-art Students Activity Centre, Campus School, Health Centre, Faculty House, Sports Stadium, Swimming Pool, Multipurpose Gymnasium Hall, Community Centre, Printing Press, Canteens, Shopping Complex, and an Administrative Block. Approximately 550 residential units are available for faculty and non-teaching staff. The campus boasts a robust Campus Wide Network with a combination of cable and Wi-Fi technologies and 1Gbps internet connectivity. Additional amenities include a serene 'Yajanshala' for spiritual and health needs, branches of State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, and Central Co-operative Bank, catering to the diverse needs of the campus community.
